While working in Excel, we often type new content or change existing data inside a cell. But what if you make a mistake, change your mind, or just want to exit without saving the changes?
That’s where the ESC (Escape) key comes in!
ESC (Escape) key – is used to cancel editing a cell in Excel.

What is the ESC Key in Excel?
The ESC key is used to cancel the edit mode in Excel. When you’re typing or editing something in a cell, pressing ESC will undo the changes and bring back the original content that was in the cell before you started editing.
Example:
Let’s say cell A1 has the value `Sales`.
You double-click the cell or press F2 and start typing `Monthly Sales Report`.
Now you realize it’s the wrong cell. Press:
ESC
Result: The cell goes back to showing `Sales` – the original value.
When to Use the ESC Key?
- You accidentally start typing in the wrong cell
- You make a mistake while editing
- You want to exit edit mode without saving changes
- You want to cancel a formula or input midway
Important Notes
- The ESC key only works before you press Enter
- Once you press Enter, the change is saved and ESC won’t undo it
- It only cancels cell edits, not changes like formatting or deleting the entire cell.
The ESC key in Excel is a quick and easy way to cancel edits without using your mouse or undo. It’s a small but powerful key that can save you from accidentally saving unwanted edits.
